On her time off, Sandra enjoys time with her kids. It's an important part of her work-life balance, especially as she models a healthy lifestyle for them. They often go hiking together – no electronics, no noise, just the pure environment and amazing views. Staying active is an important part of her lifestyle, not just as an example for her children but also her patients. She specializes in treating patients who have autoimmune disorders, and the best part of her job is being able to provide excellent care because of the teamwork and support system at UnitedHealth Group. It takes everyone working together, she says, from the physicians to ancillary services and support staff, to take care of patients in the best way possible. And she can't imagine anything else as a dream job, because she's already doing it.

"I strive to be a role model to my children as well as my patients by living the lifestyle I want them to live."

How do you describe your job to family and friends?

I mainly treat children and adults with autoimmune disorders. The immune system is like your personal army, and in autoimmune problems that army has started to attack the body instead of attacking infections.

What are the elements of your job you love?

My favorite part of the job is being able to provide excellent patient care. We have an excellent support system that makes that possible.

What are some of the greatest challenges of your job?

I think the biggest challenge is treating the whole patient – not just their physical state. In today's world of medicine, we have limited time with each patient, but I feel it's critical to also address the emotional and environmental factors that contribute to someone's health.

When you’re facing those challenges, what are some of your personal strengths and abilities that come into play?

I strive to live the lifestyle that my patients should live, with healthy nutrition, diet and exercise. By doing so, I'm a role model for my patients as well as my family.

How do those same elements show up in the passions and interests you pursue outside of work?

Hiking is a big part of my healthy lifestyle. When I'm out there, I'm enjoying the view, and I'm also getting my exercise. I usually enjoy it with my dog and my family, so it's both personal and family time.

How have you grown at UnitedHealth Group?

I've grown here, because I've been given more opportunities to provide the kind of patient care I want to give.

What’s the most important thing someone should know before joining our company?

You have to be a team player, because providing excellent care for patients requires a team approach.

Favorite person, living or dead.

Elizabeth Blackwell. She was the first female physician. She opened doors.

If you weren’t working at UnitedHealth Group or doing what you do today, what would you be doing?

This is my dream job. I wouldn't be doing anything else.

Luxury hotel or cabin?

A luxury hotel, because I'm always taking care of somebody and I want somebody to take care of me.

What's your favorite movie and why?

The Gladiator, because he fights for an ideal. He never gives up, despite all the challenges.

What are you most grateful for?

My family and my health.
